I am
occasionally asked for a complete list of my books, and am genuinely touched
when someone goes to great trouble to obtain a complete
collection. Unfortunately the following books are genuinely, completely, and
probably permanently “out of print.” I include them only for the sake
of completeness here within my web site, along
with a few comments on each. Regrettably, I do not have any spare copies of
any of them (honest!). They do show up occasionally, sometimes on the used
book market at outrageous prices, and sometimes in garage sales for a
bargain. Good luck in the search, I sure wish I had several boxes of each of
these!
AMERICA--THE MEN
AND THEIR GUNS THAT MADE HER GREAT
(Collection, Caroline House, 1981)
This book is a collection that I edited as part of an experimental (and
marginally successful) book program undertaken by Petersen Publishing
Company. The chapters, some written by genuine historians and others by
knowledgeable collectors, take specific firearms and weave their importance
into American history.
CAMPFIRES AND
GAME TRAILS
(Winchester Press, 1985)
This book was done in hardcover with dust jacket by Winchester Press;
Safari Press did a later edition in hardcover only. It was my first
one-author book, and I’m not the least ashamed of it. However, 20 good
hunting seasons have passed since its publication. I know a great deal more
today, and I have asked that this book not be reprinted.
DEER HUNTING
COAST TO COAST
(with Bob Robb, Safari Press 1989)
Two-author books can be awkward, but at this time Bob Robb and I had worked
together and hunted together for several years, and I think this book
maintains cohesion extremely well. We (Bob Robb, myself, and Safari Press)
were extremely disappointed at how slowly this book sold. Perhaps there is
limited interest in “coast to coast” deer hunting of all our types of deer.
And of course there is an awful lot of stuff out there on deer hunting of
all types. Finally, finally, this book sold out, and I doubt that we will
reprint it.
HUNTER'S HANDBOOK
(Mallard Press, 1992)
If you’ve never seen it (and few have!), this book was done as a very nice
“coffee table” book. I did not know the people who published it, but I did
it as a “work for hire” (read: no continuing royalties) during the first
Gulf War time frame. They did a great job on the book; photo selection is
wonderful and it’s a real class act. Unfortunately the company sold after
the book was printed and it was never marketed. Many copies were
remaindered at low prices, and most have just plain vanished. If you run
into this book, buy it and hang onto it!
SHOTS AT BIG GAME
(Safari Press, 1993)
When the original publisher, Stackpole, decided not to reprint this title I
bought the plates and managed to convince Safari Press’ Ludo Wurfbain that
there was still some life in this book. He, in turn, convinced me that
it would sell better in soft cover. He was right; Safari Press kept this
soft cover version in print for a dozen years! It is, pure and simple,
a very sound guide to field shooting skills, including how to find and use
natural rests, uphill and downhill shooting, hitting running game, and all
the other variables that plague us when we stand up from the shooting bench.
A great book for new hunters, but sadly no longer available.
WHITETAIL
MEDICINE
(Derrydale Publishing, 1995)
I edited a series on whitetails for Doug Mauldin back in the mid-90’s; my
own contribution to the series was a small volume on “guns and loads for
whitetail deer.” I believe the complete sets will have tremendous value one
of these days, and any given individual book from that series will always be
fairly rare.
AMERICAN HUNTING RIFLES
(Safari Press, 1995)
American Hunting Rifles was intended to be a companion title to Safari
Rifles, following essentially the same format. As an American hunter I
certainly didn’t have the same qualms about this one as I did with Safari
Rifles! Obviously there have been some new cartridges developed in the
decade since I finished writing this book, but it holds up well and, except
for those additions, I wouldn’t do it any differently today. Hardcover
6”x9”, dust jacket, 446 pages, b&w photos.
THE AFRICAN
EXPERIENCE
(Safari Press, 2001)
This book is a compilation of everything I’ve learned about African hunting
over the course of some 50 safaris. It is essentially a guide not only for
planning a safari, but for preparing for and enjoying the kind of African
experience you have dreamed about. Although intended primarily for
first-time African hunters, I think you will find it of equal value as you
expand your African hunting horizons.
Hardcover 6”x9”, dust jacket, 302 pages, color photos.
WHERE LIONS ROAR (Audio Book/CD)
(Safari Press, 2005)
Finally, Craig Boddington's long-awaited sequel to From Mt. Kenya to the
Cape—the story of Boddington's hunts in the Dark Continent during the last
ten years is here! Since writing his first African book, he has shot big
game in Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, Tanzania, Mozambique,
Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana—an unparalleled hunting
accomplishment. From the steaming jungles of the Congo basin in search of
the elusive bongo to the arid bushveld of Zimbabwe for leopard, Boddington
pursues a large array of animals. America's most popular international
hunter/writer tracks after such exotic animals as the mountain nyala, giant
forest hog, sitatunga, giant eland, and a host of other game with unusual
names. Of course he hunts such "normal" animals as the Cape buffalo, lion,
leopard, and elephant, too! Narrated by Craig Boddington. Four CD set, eight
hours of audio.
