It's surprising to think of free range hunting on the British Isles. The history of hunting across Europe is one of estates fenced for aristocracy. Hunting Western Europe often takes some mental adjustments for American hunters traveling to hunt. But, there is a place with over 25,000 unfenced acres surrounded by Ireland's Wicklows Mountains National Park.
This valley has been managed for hunting by three generations of the Nolan Family. James Nolan is the current manager and he's been at it for thirty years. His outfit, Glacial Valley Hunting is the only outfit allowed in the area. In addition to this area, he also has access to about 39 square miles of hunting areas.
Nolan was born and raised in Glenmalure. Today he remains in awe and grateful of the beauty of the area and the density of game in his valley.
You can see by the images below that Glacial Valley has very good free range sika stags. They offer free range red sika hybrid. This is a hybrid of red deer and sika deer unique to this area. It is a totally different animal you can't get everywhere. Even thought the sika stags are abundant, they are elusive. This is a real hunt.
Craig vetted this outfit with Donna some years back. He was pleased with the hospitality and the logistics. Both Craig and Donna enjoyed the hutting. I've spent a great deal of time with James. He's a smart and personable guide and outfitter. It's hard to find an outfitter with a lifetime on the land. We have a few in CBEO and it is a tremendous asset.
I spent last summer in a wheelchair due to a back injury. It created an interest in outfitters that adapt their offerings to hunters with physical challenges. Nolan is proud to accommodate disabled hunters. He's also fired up about introducing new hunters to our sport. I hope you click below to start a conversation with James. He's a fun fellow hunter to chat with.
Good Hunting,
