The White Rhino, also known as the Square-lipped Rhino, is one of the five rhinoceros species and is the largest among them. It's primarily recognized by its broad mouth used for grazing and its two horn-like growths on its snout.
They predominantly inhabit grasslands and savannahs in southern and eastern Africa, particularly in countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Kenya.
While both are African species, White Rhinos are larger and have a broader, square-shaped mouth adapted for grazing. In contrast, Black Rhinos have a more pointed, hooked-shaped lip for browsing foliage.
White Rhino hunting is heavily regulated and is illegal in many countries. In some cases, limited permits are issued to hunt older, non-breeding bulls, with proceeds often going towards conservation efforts.
Large caliber rifles, often .375 H&H or larger, are recommended due to the rhino's thick skin and sizable body.
The White Rhino's status varies between countries but is generally considered "Near Threatened" or "Vulnerable." Conservation efforts have seen their numbers increase in recent decades, especially the Southern White Rhino subspecies.
The name "White" is a mistranslation of the Dutch word "wijde," which means "wide," referring to its wide mouth. It has no relation to its actual color.
White Rhinos are generally docile compared to Black Rhinos but can be aggressive if provoked or threatened, especially when protecting their young.
Conservation initiatives include anti-poaching units, relocation projects, and breeding programs. Tourism and legal, controlled hunting can also generate funds for conservation.
